The Italians Upstairs was set up by chef Joe during lockdown, cooking and delivering Italian meals to his neighbourhood. Now, after trading at markets and pop-ups in taprooms, they have taken over the kitchen at the Renegade Urban Winery's large taproom in Lockwood Way, E17, serving for 3 months (May, June & July 2023, Thursdays to Saturdays).
The menu comprises small plates, bar snacks, pasta and desserts, and I tried a few dishes when I visited yesterday; the Burrata, a Pane e Panelle (a street food snack with a fried chick pea fritter in a brioche bun), wild garlic & ricotta pasta, and finishing with the tiramisu.
All were excellent; if I had to choose favourites it would be the burrata (with a tomato & nduja sauce), and the chick pea fritter. The burrata was probably the best I have ever had.
It also works incredibly well in the indoor mezzanine restaurant space. They are literally The Italians Upstairs! I am told that they have been turning away diners on some evenings, so it's best to book, or find a quiet Saturday lunchtime like I did.
When - Thursdays to Saturdays until August 2023
Where - Renegade Urban Winery, 7 Lockwood Way, E17 5RB
