Greek chef Maria Elia is popping up at Great Guns Social near Borough for just under 3 weeks, from Tuesday 4th to Saturday 22nd June 2019, serving Tuesdays to Saturdays. Maria's food is raved about by those in the know, and the short residency will include some of her favourites, like Savoury Baklavas, and Moussaka Croquettes! It will open for lunch and dinner, with lunch featuring lighter items like salads, and evenings having the option of a feasting menu for groups of friends (be sure to book at least two days ahead for this). "Maria Elia is starting off a summer of inventive Greek cooking with a three-week residency at Great Guns Social in Southwark from Tuesday June 4th.
Maria’s been hot footing it around the globe cooking and consulting and this latest residency sees a welcome and much longed-for return to the kitchen. Her ‘Smashing Plates’ menu will feature some of her favourite dishes, redefining Greek food as we know it - such as her famous Savoury Baklavas, Moussaka Croquettes, Carrot Keftedes, Bream with pourgouri, cherries and mint, Octopus and caper gnocchi and Kataifi wrapped figs with baklava nuts and fig-leaf panna cotta.
The menu is a true feast for foodies, with a small light lunch menu offering of main course salads such as Feta, peach and dakos. Additionally, for groups of friends Maria will be offering a feasting dinner menu for 6 or more, featuring whole slow roast shoulder of lamb accompanied by an array of dips, salads and sides. Maria politely asks for 2 days’ notice for this sharing feast.
Maria Elia’s love of cooking developed as a child growing up in the kitchen of her Greek Cypriot father’s restaurant in Richmond. After a rigorous apprenticeship, Maria began her progression through the culinary world. After making a name for herself heading up the kitchens at Delfina and Whitechapel Gallery Dining Room - including stages at El Bulli and Arzak - Maria spent time in California where she was headhunted to open ‘Jimmy’s restaurant at The Landing’, a five star boutique resort where she created a unique fresh and eclectic Greek Californian cuisine gaining rave reviews.
After spending time in Rwanda where she established a sought after pop-up restaurant following, Maria is now based in London where she writes, cooks and teaches, she has also established herself as a consultant in demand, designing concepts for restaurant start-ups and various projects around the globe as well as being the Gastronomic Curator at Great Guns Social. Maria is the author of 3 award winning books: The Modern Vegetarian, Full of Flavour and Smashing Plates which draws on her Anglo Greek heritage-redefining Greek flavours.
