Anahita & Negar run the Golpar Supper Club, cooking regional Persian dishes. Events happen twice a month- focusing on different regions and cities each time, and the next one takes place at Gitane restaurant in Great Titchfield Street, north of Oxford Street, on Saturday 24th January, with dishes from the city of Qazvin, which was former capital of the Persian Empire under the Safavid dynasty. Tickets are just £30 per head (£35 inc half a bottle of wine) - full details below.
"In this Supper club, we are paying a visit to the province of Qazvin.
The city of Qazvin, which is the capital of the province is located in northwest of Tehran and was former capital of the Persian Empire under the Safavid dynasty. Qazvin geographically connects Tehran, Isfahan, and the Persian Gulf to the Caspian seacoast; hence the region has a strategic location in the country. In the 19th Century Qazvin flourished as a centre of trade and its Bazaars’ expanded.
People of Qazvin are passionate about food and in particular anything sweet. One of the best types of Baklava in Iran comes from this region. The signature dish of this region is called Gheymeh Nesar which is lamb stew cooked yellow split pea and Iranian dried lime. This dish is served with jeweled rice which contains pistachios, almond, saffron, barberries and orange peels.
Another important city in this region is the city of Takestan which in English translates to “vineyard”. In total an area 350,000 km2 of vineyards covers the region of Qazvin. The grapes are mainly used to produce vinegar, raisins and grape molasses!
We truly hope that you enjoy the menu that we have created for you from this gastronomically passionate province.
