Dine with Kyi's August Burmese Street Kitchen Pop-up in Homerton

Burmese chef Kyi sold out her last pop-up at  Well Street Kitchen in E9, so she's back for another night on Friday 8th August.  As before it will feature 9 different dishes, in a friendly, sharing style - see flyer above for details of the food.  £1 from the £28 ticket price will go the the  Mind to Mind Myanmar charity.

"Summer is finally here and Dine with Kyi (pronounced ‘Chi’) have teamed up with Well Street Kitchen to host Burma Street Kitchen, a Burmese picnic in Hackney.  Diners get to experience 9 different mouth-watering tastes of Burma in handy size portions.  In her menu, chef Thuzar Kyi, pays homage to her late mother by serving home-cooked Burmese flavours that she grew up with, in a contemporary picnic, using seasonal and local ingredients.
Burma borders, among others, India, China and Thailand, which are some of the most popular cuisines in the UK. Burmese cuisine is an amalgamation of all these cuisines, resulting in unique and tasty dishes. Thus instead of thinking should you pick an Indian, Chinese or Thai curry tonight... have all three and choose Burmese.
In keeping with Burmese culture, communal tables will encourage guests to share a meal and conversation, and to make new friends.  There will also be a fully stocked bar serving soft drinks, beers and wine.
£1 per ticket will go to Mind to Mind Myanmar - A Burmese charity supporting the well-being of mentally ill patients in Myanmar."

When - Friday 8th August, 7pm - 10pm

Where - Well Street Kitchen, 203 Well Street, E9 6QU

Tickets - £28 per person, for 9 different nibbles of Burma, from Eventbrite here

Beef & Liberty's People's Steak Night in Bloomsbury

Alexander Pashby of Tongue 'n Cheek has a new project - the people's steak club.  Once a month he will put on a steak night in Bloomsbury, WC1, with The People's Supermarket, catering for serious steak enthusiasts, at a good price (there are also very good vegetarian options).  See below for the menu - looks superb!

"The People's Steak Club is a new monthly neighbourhood steak night in Bloomsbury brought to you by street food start up/upstart Beef & Liberty and social enterprise The People's Supermarket.
The aim is to democratise the idea of an old London steak club, keeping the social aspect (come prepared to talk to the person sitting next to you) while making it more affordable by offering a meal that would cost two to three times more at Hawksmoor or Goodman, for example
Both individual and cooperative share a love of high quality, locally sourced, sustainable ingredients, the result of which is the first night's menu, centred around charcoal grilled, grass fed, native breed beef supplied by top butcher, Turner & George.
Menu
A glass of Borough Wine or Kernel Table Beer
Steak tartare or truffled Wild Mushrooms on toasted sourdough
Bone-in Rib Eye, triple cooked chips, dressed salad and a selection of steak sauces

The Art of Dining's 'The Colour Palate' Dinners in Marylebone

The Colour Palate is pop-up dining experience combining food, drink, music and colour.  Create by regular organisers The Art of Dining takes place at Carousel in Marylebone from Wednesday to Saturday for three weeks this August and September, starting Weds 20th.  Diners get to enjoy a delicious five course meal, a welcome drink and a chance to literally taste the rainbow!

"The Art of Dining brings you ‘The Colour Palate’ - a series of pop-up suppers in London's Marylebone.
Green, red, yellow, white or black: every colour can spark off a range of different emotions. Colours can be soothing or stimulating, uplifting or sinister; but how often do we really focus on colour and experience the full intensity of its impact?
For its next exciting pop-up event, The Art of Dining will stimulate your different senses - taste, vision, hearing, touch and smell - in an exploration of colour. The dining room, your plate and your glass will be flooded with different colours as each course arrives and the music changes. Expect to be stimulated, amused and delighted by the setting and your meal, as you savour an eclectic mix of punchy tastes and delicious flavours.
The gauntlet has been thrown for chef Ellen Parr, who trained at Moro restaurant in London's Exmouth Market. Choosing ingredients firstly for colour is not her usual starting point …. but a challenge she is rising to!
Artist and set designer Alice Hodge will use lighting and transparent materials to create an ever changing environment for your meal to take place within. You will be interacting with courses to complete your own colour palate throughout the evening.
Music will be provided by Radio One DJ Gemma Cairney."

Boomf's 'Print Instagram Pics onto Marshmallows' Pop-up at Selfridges

Boomf is a site that lets you print your favourite Instagram pics onto marshmallows.  In true pop-up tradition they've gone live in the real world with an indoor machine at Selfridges where you can print on demand.  Just connect to your Instagram, pick the photos, and collect your marshmallows in five minutes.  They're on the ground floor at Selfridges Food Hall, in the 'Meet The Makers' section

In short, Boomf on Demand lets you eat your face without delay. These multi-sensory delicacies cost just £15 for a box of 9. You want your Boomf in 5 minutes? Boomf! You’ve got it!
The Boomf on Demand machine is built out of a 1950s Pashley’s ice cream tricycle, lovingly reconditioned and repurposed by Boomf’s inventor James Middleton."

Lemonade & Laughing Gas' Surrealist Dinner Party in East London

This August Lemonade and Laughing Gas are back for another immersive, fun night of food, cocktails and unusual fun, this time on the theme of a surreal dinner party.  Food is 'imagined' by moro head chef Flo Hiller, and cocktails are by regular collaborator Alex Orwin.  Dress up, and be prepared for anything...

"In 1972, Baronness Marie-Hélène Rothschild threw a deliriously extravagant party for guests including Salvador Dali, Audrey Hepburn and Richard Burton. The result was the infamous ‘Diner de Têtes Surrealiste’...

This August, Lemonade and Laughing Gas invite you to enter this world for their next immersive dining experience, as they re-imagine and reconstruct this notorious dinner party...with your help.
Black tie and surrealist heads are compulsory. The rather exciting venue will be announced the week before (hint - East, Zone 2).

More clues will be unveiled in the weeks leading up to the event, and for those that wish, a downloadable journey route will be available from three different starting points, to lead you to the party in the way that L&LG know best.

The eating part of the evening will be art installation crossed with an experimental buffet: part sit down dinner, part eating journey discovered by you. The menu has been imagined by Moro head chef Flo Hillier, and is inspired by the 1972 menu's oddities such as ‘Chevres hurlant de Tristesse’ (roughly translated as ‘cheese of goat screaming in post-coital sadness’).  As usual, we’re collaborating with genius mixologist Alex Orwin for mind-bending cocktails and expertly paired drinks."

When - Thurs 14th - Sat 16th August, 7pm - 1am

Where - A secret location 'in East London, Zone 2'

Tickets - £45 from Design My Night here

Cornershop - the world's first knitted & handmade sweet shop near Columbia Road E2

For one month only a very special art project, Cornershop, is opening in Wellington Row, E2.  Artist Lucy Sparrow has recreated a corner shop, using entirely knitted and cloth items.  You can get an idea from her previous work on her site - looks like lots of fun.  It starts on Friday 1st with a launch party from 6pm, including free sweets...  Note that it's an art project, but things are on sale here

"Get 'felt up' at the cuddliest, Kookiest cornershop in the world
The fluffiest, furriest shopping experience imaginable
- In a lovingly restored abandoned cornership in E2 for a whole month
- Everything in the shop has been handmade over 7 months
- Sewing workshops in the shop for local community charities across the month
An art show truly worth making a fuzz about, Lucy Sparrow’s Cornershop is the fluffiest, furriest shopping experience imaginable. She’s filled a former derelict store in Bethnal Green with over 4,000 handmade felt versions of familiar grocery items - from fish fingers and cans of SPAM to sanitary towels and newspapers, rocket ice lollies and oven chips to ciggies, veggies, and what is most certainly the softest loo roll ever manufactured.
Every single thing inside the Cornershop – the till, the functioning pricing gun, the contents of freezers, the pick ‘n’ mix stand – is fashioned from fabric, and the whole lot took Lucy seven months to complete.
All her highly huggable versions of everyday essentials are for sale, but will stay in the store for a month, during which time a variety of sewing workshops will take place, designed to engage the local community (particularly individuals with autism and sectors often socially excluded) in relatable, accessible art that’s relevant to them and their neighbourhood and has been brought right to their doorstep. People can sign up to these workshops in the shop and group workshops for charities can be arranged through Lucy.
This exhibition has been supported by the Arts Council, Tower Hamlets Council and Kickstarter. The event is sponsored by Swizzel’s sweets."

Jamie Oliver's Drinks Tube's Cocktail Request Week at Old Street Station

Next week, from Monday to Friday, people from Jamie Oliver's Drinks Tube - the drinks counterpart to Food Tube - will be popping up at Old Street Underground Station to demonstrate how to make cocktails.

Note that there's nothing to buy and that they are severely restricted on handing out alcohol, but people can come down and watch what's happening and please make a request for a new cocktail through social media using the hashtag #CocktailRequest

You can suggest your own, or a favourite ingredient for inspiration, and if you're chosen they will make it.

"Next week Jamie Oliver’s Drinks Tube is setting up shop in Old Street Tube Station in East London for a special week of cocktail making.
They will be taking requests from passers by, Twitter and Facebook followers, and a few choice celebrities, then knocking them up throughout the day. To get involved and get your cocktail made just use the hashtag #cocktailrequest to send us a picture of your favourite ingredient, or a scene that you think might inspire our mixologists. They’ll then knock it up and the video uploaded to Drinks Tube as soon as it’s ready.
If we pick your picture not only will you get a mention and a cocktail recipe, we’ll even name the cocktail after you. If you’re in the vicinity you could even come down and watch it being made and filmed – on the day we’ll have lots of special guests, including Simone Caporale, DJ BBQ, Gennaro and Jonny from the Craft Beer Channel."

When - Monday 28th July - Friday 1st August

Churn2's Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream Pop-up at Somerset House

This summer Churn2, from Cambridge, Massachusetts, is setting up in a shipping container at Somerset House to serve their on-demand ice creams, made with liquid nitrogen.  No heavy duty freezers, just ice creams made for you in a number of flavours while you wait.

"This summer, London welcomes Churn2, the modern shipping container turned liquid nitrogen ice cream pop-up laboratory, which will be situated in The Edmond J. Safra Court of Somerset House until 30th August.
Churn2 is the world’s first mobile liquid nitrogen ice cream shop from American foodie entrepreneur Ash Chan, who uses the cryogenic freezing process to create on-demand ice creams that are not only a visual spectacle but are also dense, smooth and creamier in texture than regular ice cream. The flash-frozen ice cream is available in small (£2.50) or regular (£3.70) and uses fresh ingredients to create a weekly changing menu of two options. Creative flavour combinations include strawberry cheesecake, lemon and basil, and chocolate coconut.
Crossing the Atlantic for the first time from its Boston home, the modified shipping container will arrive in all its striking orange detailed glory. The container will open up at the front to reveal a serving hatch lined with three nitro mixers, which emit a theatrical smoky vapour while your ice cream is made. The process eliminates the use of heavy duty freezers making the container an environmentally friendly addition to the London food truck scene.
The iconic courtyard of Somerset House will be home to the ice cream pop up throughout the summer months. Operating from 11am – 6pm on weekdays and 11am – 7pm on weekends, Churn2 will extend its opening hours to 8.30pm during Somerset House’s summer evening events programme, which include the Film4 Summer Screen, during which a special popcorn flavoured ice cream will be served."

Guest Projects' Artist Dinner for Marcel Duchamp, near Broadway Market

The Artist Dining Room is a regular event that celebrates artists through food.  On Friday 1st August it will honour French artist Marcel Duchamp with a dinner that includes dishes inspired by his work, created by guest chefs Banquet and artist Doug Fishbone.  Tickets are just £36.50 for this very memorable night.

"Yinka Shonibare MBE's project space Guest Projects joins creative forces with London-based chefs to hold a series of sensory tingling supper clubs which will be much more than just a feast for the palate, but for the eyes, ears, imagination and beyond. The Artist Dining Room supper club at Guest Projects opens a space where creative minds can engage with the ideas of a well known artist through food.

Our Summer supperclub holds an evening of Dadaist fantasy, inspired by French artist Marcel Duchamp (along with his alter egos Rrose Sélavy and R.Mutt). Guests will indulge in a French influenced 4-course meal created by Guest Chef BANQUET; taking your palate though an exploration of the world Duchamp's mind for the evening. Guest Host artist Doug Fishbone will lead guests through an evening of humour, satire and performance to uncover the life and works of Duchamp.

Marcel Duchamp was born July 28, 1887, in France. After the sensation caused by Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2 (1912), he painted few other pictures. He became famous for his "ready-mades" and heralded an artistic revolution. Associated with the Dadaist and Surrealist movements Duchamp broke down boundaries between works of art and everyday objects. Largely ignored during his lifetime, he was in his 70s when he emerged as master whose entirely new attitude toward art and society changed the future of visual arts.
