Mamapen's Cambodian Residency at The Prince Arthur in Dalston

Mamapen, the 'Khymer BBQ' joint run by chef  Kaneda Pen, formerly of Flank and St John, started their pop-up at The Prince Arthur back in March.  When the lockdown came they switched to takeaway only (which they are still doing), and from Saturday 4th July 2020 they will be serving in the pub.  

I was due to visit when the lockdown started and I can't wait to go now that we can travel more freely.  The food looks brilliant (which it should given the chef's pedigree) and it sounds like they have become popular with their local customers.

"Brand new to resurrected London Fields pub, The Prince Arthur, is Mamapen - a celebration

of street food, family feasting and backyard BBQs focused through a lens of Khmer cuisine

and culture.

With Kaneda Pen at the helm - former head chef at Flank with experience working in the St

John’s kitchen - you can expect high quality meat and no nonsense cooking. A menu

designed for sharing, Mamapen offers small plates of Cambodian skewers of beef, pork,

chicken or king mushrooms, alongside sour pineapple curry with sweet pickled mango and

tofu knots with chilli oil and peanuts.

Mamapen hits the London food scene at a time when the capital is low on laughs and unity.

The Prince Arthur has recently reopened following a year of closure. Following a meeting

with the neighbours to understand what the residents wanted from their local, the sentiment

from everyone was clear: a pub that held community spirit at its core, encouraged good

times whilst keeping the traditional, independent pub alive. Mamapen’s menu of sharing

dishes creates a feeling of social cohesion whilst offering unique tastes from a cuisine not

vastly explored in London, as well as a show stopping Sunday roast for the more

traditionalists.

The pub has a fridge of hand selected rare and unique beers as well as your standard

favourites on draft and local brews by Macintosh and Five Points."
