The Blue Lotus Opium Den is a four day pop-up at Carousel in Marylebone, re-creating the seedy opium dens of San Francisco from the 1870s (without the opium, presumably...). Your £38 ticket gets you admittance and 5 dim sum, plus access to their immersive world, including a cocktail bar and live music. It runs from Wednesday 30th September to Saturday 3rd October - and tickets are selling fast!
"Shuttlecock Inc., the creative team behind award-winning immersive pop-up experiences such as Mile High, The Great Indian Peninsula Railway and Rumble at the Deli, return at the end of this month with ‘The Blue Lotus’ Opium Den from Wednesday 30th September to Saturday 3rd October. For four days The Blue Lotus will artfully combine flavour, design, performance and music Downstairs at Carousel - the restaurant, art gallery and creative hub in Marylebone. Taking them back to the infamously seedy Opium Dens of 1870s San Francisco, guests at The Blue Lotus will have the chance to sample sumptuous smoky cocktails and traditional Chinese dim sum, whilst taking part in some of the wildest immersive entertainment inspired by the era.
Back then, gambling, prostitution and slavery were commonplace, with over 15,000 immigrants crammed into Chinatown’s 20 city blocks. A popular pastime shared by down-at-heel Chinese and Americans alike was yāpiàn (opium); demand for this moreish narcotic became so great that soon a network of opium dens were established in the neighbourhood. The most notorious of all was ‘The Blue Lotus’, located at the back of a Chinese laundry on Stockton Street - a haven of secrecy, crime and dope where low lives and scoundrels would gather in their hundreds to smoke the night away.
The Shuttlecock Inc. team will recreate The Blue Lotus in all its insalubrious glory in Carousel’s distinctive Downstairs space, serving up a selection of traditional Chinese dim sum served from rickety stalls on a Chinatown street corner, before leading guest through the Chinese laundry to enjoy live music, potent Monkey Shoulder cocktails and irreverent entertainment from a colourful cast of period characters in the Opium Den itself."
