The Golpar Supper Club, at Gitane Restaurant in Great Titchfield Street, holds regular Persian dinners, focussing on cuisine from different parts of the country. On Saturday 20th June it will be a very special one, focussing on street food from Tehran, with a menu that includes Persian style Shami Kebab, and Char grilled saffron marinated chicken. The dinner costs just £35, and it is BYOB.
"We are hosting our 8th supper club. We cooked dishes from Isfahan, Gilan, Tabriz, Ahwaz, Ghazvin and Mazandaran but this time we are both eager to visit the city that we both grew up in, TEHRAN.
Throughout the history Isfahan or Persepolis has a convincing case for being the soul of Iran. Tehran, with its relatively short history, ugly buildings, manic streets with hundreds of cars stock for hours in the traffic, is the last place that many Tehranis would recommend to hang around. But to take their advice is to miss out, and to the younger generation Tehran is the big, chaotic and dynamic beating heart of Iran.
Being located on the lower slopes of the Alborz Mountains, Tehran attracts everyone from across the country. There are huge range of traditional and international restaurants, trendy cafes and cool teahouses with plenty of art galleries and museums.
Tehran is packed with restaurants and on Fridays which is the weekend, majority of the Tehranis eat Chelo Kebab. There are hundreds of Kebab houses around the city and people do take the quality of their kebabs very seriously. Lamb or Chicken minced or in chunks, are most popular and they are often served with grilled tomatoes, a healthy plate of rice and flat bread, and raw onions.
Typically, black tea is served with crystallized raw sugar on a stick after the meal. This certainly helps!
