This year marks the 100th anniversary of the British Red Cross's first 'pop-up shop', and to mark the event their holding an 11 day pop-up in Covent Garden, in the Market Building, to sell items donated by designers & celebrities, including Erdem, Stella McCartney, Giles Deacon, Sienna Miller, Philip Treacy and many more. It's open from 7th - 17th November, 11am - 7pm.
"To celebrate 100 years of pop-up shops, the British Red Cross will be launching a 10-day designer boutique in Covent Garden next month featuring pieces donated by Erdem, Stella McCartney, Giles Deacon, Sienna Miller, Philip Treacy and more. Although they may seem like a modern phenomenon the first pop-up shop was actually hosted by the charity in 1914 to raise money during the First World War.
Named ‘The Gift House’ after the original WW1 shops, the pop-up is also the start of an initiative to help drive donations to the British Red Cross’ 330 permanent charity shops throughout Britain. To honour the unique donations received in 1914, which included everything from Egyptian tapestries to a Persian kitten, there will be a number of clothing, accessory and home-ware items available exclusively from the Covent Garden pop-up.
“This is a very special campaign not only celebrating 100 years of Red Cross Shops but also commemorating the extraordinary commitment and sacrifice of our volunteers during the First World War,” said Paul Thompson, head of retail at the British Red Cross. “We are extremely grateful for the generous donations we have received from a variety of high-profile designers and home-ware brands, just as we were for the donations we received 100 years ago, and I really hope that people across the UK will get behind the stock drive campaign and donate to their local Red Cross shops”."
