It was only a matter of time before someone made a feature of horse meat. This week the Popbitch email had an ad in it for a horse meat half pound burger on sale for one week only at the Lord Nelson in SE1. I looked online but couldn't find any more info, but luckily Burgerac was on the case, and rang them up. Here are the details:
"Yes, I can confirm that the Lord Nelson ARE doing a horse special burger next week, with meat sourced from Borough Market's Gamston Wood Farm (http://www.gamstonwoodfarm.com/) which specialise in ostrich and other exotic meats. Actually, Simon Ward at the Lord Nelson tells me that Gamston is one of only five butchers licensed to sell horse meat in the UK and he trusts them implicitly. The idea of eating horse isn't too crazy a concept to him - in the last year the pub has served weekly special burgers with elk, bison, ostrich, water buffalo, kudu, springbok, kangaroo, wildebeest, zebra and crocodile.
So yes, if you fancy sampling an as-advertised horse burger next week (around £11 for burger, fries and coleslaw) get on down to the Lord Nelson."
When - 25th February - 9th March - extended to two weeks!
Where - at 243 Union Street, SE1 0LR
