Record Store Day 2012 Around London

Record Store Day, which takes place this year on 21st April, is an annual celebration of record shops.  It started in the US, but it's been happening in the UK for a while now.  I had lots of fun last year outside (& inside) Rough Trade West in Notting Hill - lots of bands playing, lots of happy people milling around.  Check the official site near the time to see what is planned for each store.  With stores like Dress Circle in Covent Garden taking part, and bands releasing music just for the day, there's going to be so much variety in the events this year.

"This is the one day that all of the independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and hundreds of artists across the globe make special appearances and performances. Festivities include performances, meet & greets with artists, DJ's, in store quizzes and many other events."

Pop-up Shopping Parade in Willesden Green

This is the sort of project I love to write about!  A parade of 8 shops in Willesden Green has been re-opened as pop-up units, helping to regenerate the local area.  There are lots of businesses represented here, and there's a launch event next Thursday.  You can see from Google Streetview how depressing the row of empty shops looked; now it's bustling and vibrant.  It's the sort of project that Mary Portas would make a TV show about, but thankfully she hasn't.  I hope everyone gets behind this great initiative!

"This week, Queens Parade retail space in Willesden Green is once again open for business with a vibrant collection of start-up businesses and projects.
The parade of eight shop units and offices – which has not been in retail use for many years - is now home to thirteen creative enterprises that offer a range of goods and services, from home-wares and interior design, to an art gallery and a vintage clothes emporium.
The former textiles building has been secured by the New Windows on Willesden Green project on a ‘meanwhile’ lease to give these fledgling businesses a chance to try out their ideas in a well-located high street space. The building’s run-down façade is being given a new look, care of designer Kieren Jones, and the interior decorations have been carried out with the help of Painting and Decorating students from the local College of North West London.
The reactivation of this underused high street building is part of the New Windows on Willesden Green project supported by the Mayor’s Outer London Fund. It is being delivered for Brent Council and Design for London by The Architecture Foundation in collaboration with Meanwhile Space and Blue Consulting with the view to bring positive change and new audiences to Willesden Green.
A rigorous selection process was undertaken to choose which businesses and projects would benefit most from the space, contribute best to the local community, complement the existing businesses on the high street and work well together to create a new destination in Willesden Green.
Queens Parade will be hosting a series of exciting events, activities and workshops over the coming months, kicking off with its official launch celebration on 29 March 2012 from 5:30pm.
Over the forthcoming holiday there will also be events which are free and open to all, improving the appearance of the High Road and marking a new addition to Willesden Green’s retail and cultural offer. There is also the opportunity to hone your own business skills at one of the Library Lab workshops in the Willesden Green Library Centre."

The Shops & businesses are:
Art Lobby
Jardins D'EDEN

When - Big opening on Thursday 29th March, then all units will be open

Where - Queen's Parade, Walm Lane, Willesden Green, NW2 5HT

Jersey's Bohemia Pop-up at The Dorchester in Park Lane

In May Shaun Rankin, the head chef from Jersey's Bohemia restaurant, will be cooking at The Dorchester for one week to promote produce from Jersey and the other channel islands.

"Head chef Brian Hughson invites Bohemia’s Shaun Rankin into his kitchen to bring a flavour of Jersey to the capital.
From Monday 14 to Saturday 19 May 2012, Michelin star TV chef Shaun Rankin will team up with Brian Hughson at The Grill at The Dorchester bringing Jersey to London.
The menu will offer predominantly Jersey produce such as new season Jersey asparagus and potatoes, Jersey scallops and lobster, as well as new season lamb from the smaller Channel Island of Sark, and Guernsey Fort Grey cheese. Sample menu highlights will include Shaun’s signature dishes: New season Jersey asparagus, three hour cooked duck egg with morel mushrooms and herb sabayon; Warm Jersey lobster with a crab & fennel ceviche gratin of saffron macaroni; Slow cooked belly and spiced glazed cheek of pork, sweet potato and orange, local Jersey calamari; and his winning Treacle tart with Jersey clotted cream ice cream, which wowed the judges in BBC Two’s Great British Menu.
Rankin has been instrumental in championing Jersey produce since 2006 when he was named British Chef of the Year by the Independent. At the Michelin starred Bohemia, part of The Club Hotel & Spa in St Helier, he enjoys a close relationship with local suppliers, foragers and producers. Shaun has lived on the island for 18 years and calls Jersey his own ‘nine-mile long kitchen garden’. His dedication to provenance and the cuisine of the British Isles forms a central axis around which a diversity of influences accrued from his experience in America, Australia and the UK, revolve.
The Grill at The Dorchester is renowned for showcasing the best of modern British cuisine made with the finest ingredients from Scotland, Devon, and Cornwall. With a reputation for assured and elegant cooking, Head chef Brian Hughson works tirelessly to source quality, organic produce wherever possible, such as beef, lamb, salmon and garden vegetables.
The combined strengths of these two forward-thinking chefs will provide an unparalleled and exceptional opportunity for diners at The Grill to savour the secrets of the Channel Islands’ cuisine."

Wonder Hill Handmade & Vintage Market in London Bridge

Wonder Hill Market is a regular market in London Bridge, happening on the last Saturday of each month. It's near enough to Borough Market, and Maltby Street to combine with visits to them.  I'm seeing lots of markets these days,  so I'll soon be adding a special 'markets' page to the site.  Stay tuned...

"Wonder Hill provides a platform for local designer makers and vintage collectors to showcase and sell their wares. Supporting an ethical standpoint everything is created in the UK or sustainably sourced and offers a fun alternative to high street shopping being based in a pub with a sunny beer garden, great food and cake!
In March we return once more to our wonderfully eclectic home of the Miller. A place that has brought us sunshine, smiles, barbeques, one afternoon tipple too many and an abundance of wonderful traders and shoppers.
Our traders often tell us, its like going home at the end of each month (yes, we run every last saturday of each month at this location!) Which is rather lovely! However that said, we do offer a different range of traders each and every month, so its always a different show for you lovely shoppers.
We were originally set up to offer an alternative to high street shopping - you wont find mass produced items here, made unethically and then transported unethically across seas to our high streets. What you will find is individually made items, created by hand in the UK, mostly even in the local areas in London, along with a series of upcycled and vintage clothing and accessories. What more could you ask for than a set of wonderfully looking AND priced items that are also great for you, our environment and alot of ethical causes?!...
What was that? .....Oh yes, you could ask for a piece of cake, a glass of wine or a beer in your hand and somewhere to have lunch that plays great music, has a lovely sunny beer garden and greets you with smiles but then you would know that we offer all of that at the Miller also - free of entry charge.
So come join us, its a lovely place to just chill out on a saturday afternoon, buy your crafting supplies, your handmade gifts, your easter presents, bonnets and incredible vintage find."

When - Saturday 31st March

'Spark' Pop-up shop off Walworth Road, offering training to unemployed youth

This is easily one of my favourite pop-up projects.  The Creation Trust has set up a pop-up shop, Spark, off Walworth Road, to provide training to young unemployed people who need work experience in retail.  Products on sale include craft items, sourced from an earlier appeal.  It's also a gallery, with exhibitions.  I hope everyone gets behind this brilliant & inspiring initiative!

"A ‘pop-up’ shop has opened in London, employing 20 unemployed people, in a bid to prepare them for careers in retail.
The initiative was launched by First Friday, the retail training and consultancy company.
The Pop-Up Shop Project is a training initiative allowing 20 unemployed young adults from the Walworth Road area in South East London, to launch and manage their very own 'pop-up' retail outlet. They will sell products that are locally sourced to showcase local craftwork as well as fashion items printed with their own designs. The Pop-Up shop opens for its first day of trading today.
The Pop-Up Shop Project, spearheaded by Creation Trust in association with Southwark Council, encourages local unemployed youths around the ages of 16 - 24, to become more business minded and entrepreneurial.
The project recruited directly from candidates in the Walworth area of South East London, with the aim of attracting young adults with an interest in working in the retail industry. The trainees embarked on a four week training programme, spanning the decision-making process of setting up and running a retail store; from the branding of the shop to buying stock, negotiating with suppliers, selecting premises, visual merchandising and running the store. Today's store opening marks the culmination of their specialist retail training, and now these young entrepreneurs will go on to manage the store for a period of three weeks.
In addition to the valuable experience of running their own store, the participants will receive an accreditation to illustrate the skills they have developed and demonstrated during the programme, which will improve their prospects of gaining work in retail.
This programme required trainers from the retail industry to ensure its credibility to possible future employers, and make certain that candidates received the best possible opportunity to excel. This prompted Creation Trust to select First Friday to mentor the group throughout the four week training programme and during the pop-up shop trading period. First Friday's retail credentials were key in ensuring that the expert content and guidance for this project was delivered to the candidates."

Flight BA2012 Pop-up Olympic Venue & Experience in Shoreditch

This is the first of many expected 'Olympic' pop-ups.  BA are creating a special lounge in East London to get people into the Olympic mood, including their new airline food, and a couple of very special films.  At £50 a head this isn't cheap, but I think it'll be a very hot ticket.

"British Airways will launch an exclusive airline themed pop-up venue – ‘Flight BA2012’, celebrating the best in British talent in the run up to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.  Open on select weekdays from April 4 to 17, the three-in-one art gallery, cinema and dining lounge will showcase the works of the BA Great Britons who were mentored by Richard E Grant, Tracey Emin and Heston Blumenthal.
Great Britons Prasanna Purwanarajah, Pascal Anson and Simon Hulstone have created Olympic Games themed work, including a short-film, a ‘Dove’ artwork livery for celebratory aircraft and a bold British menu.
The airline-themed venue hosted in East London, has been exclusively designed to recreate a premium flying experience, and will offer guests a sneak preview of the Great Britons works before they are rolled out on flights from April. Bookings can be made from March 19 at; www.facebook.com/britishairways
Flight BA2012 includes artwork from artist-designer Pascal Anson from Brighton, who was mentored by Tracey Emin on his ‘Dove’ design for a range of celebratory aircraft displayed in the gallery.  It also features short film ‘BOY’ starring Timothy Spall, written by screenwriter Prasanna Purwanarajah under the mentorship of Richard E Grant, which will be screened in the cinema. Guests will also be able to sample a bold British menu created by Michelin-star chef Simon Hulstone, who has produced an Olympic Games inspired menu under the guidance of Heston Blumenthal.
Frank van der Post, British Airways managing director of brands and customer experience, said: “We wanted to bring the flying experience to the public, allowing guests to preview our in-flight entertainment, celebratory aircraft livery and on-board menus in anticipation of the London 2012 Games. This is going to be an exciting year for the capital and this is just the very start of our take-off!”
British Airways is the official airline of the London 2012 Games."

When - April; 4th - 5th, 10th - 13th & 16 - 17

Where - 3-10 Shoreditch High St, East London, E1 6PG

Pop-up Exhibition of Contemporary Printmaking in Bloomsbury

For one week only you can see a new exhibition of contemporary printmaking, including talks and other events.  There are also some planned events: On the evening of 14th March, Gabriel Angel Moreno, will be reading a selection of his poetry written in response to the works in the exhibition, and on Saturday 17th March, at 4pm, Giulia Zaniol will lead an informal talk on the art of printmaking.

"Orion Contemporary is proud to announce the second ‘edition’ of Contemporary Printmaking, an exhibition promoting printmaking as an art form and celebrating the importance of the medium.  Following the inaugural printmaking exhibition in 2011, this exhibition includes a variety of exciting and innovative prints by Lisa Denyer, Alexander Gough, Damien Hirst, David Hockney, Max Lowry, Dénes Maróti, Will Martyr, Andy Warhol and Giulia Zaniol.
The exhibition seeks to bring together a dazzling array of works to offer audiences a fresh take on printmaking, juxtaposing highly-regarded household names with Orion’s young, emerging stable of artists.  Andrés Olow Clase, director of Orion Contemporary, says ‘From Andy Warhol’s exceptional print of 1974 to works made in 2012, the show explores the diverse vivacity and technical skill of printmaking.’  All artists in the show excel as painters as well as recognising the importance of the print; Zaniol, Maróti and Gough will be displaying previously unseen works, fresh off the press."

Tooting Market Re-Vamp Event

Tooting market is changing.  The indoor market, first opened in 1930, has had a re-vamp, with new traders and new events, to make it more like the very successful indoor markets in Brixton.  I love what's happened to Brixton Village, and if they can do this for Tooting then it's going to be great.  They also have an entertainment licence, and are looking for some people to run pop-up events in the future (see the links at the bottom).  Also, make sure you check out the Brickbox Cafe, now being run by team '@number3'.  This event is to launch the re-vamp - come along if you can.

"Tooting Market, culturally diverse and ever changing, offers a wide range of cuisines, alternative therapies, music, clothing, fabrics and fascinating products from all corners of the world.
On Saturday 10th March we will be celebrating the arrival of our new traders, their involvement in the market and all things Tooting.
Between 12 and 4pm the market will be buzzing with excitement, there will be live music performances all afternoon, free tea, coffee and home made cakes and special promotional deals on the various food stalls within the market.
“Everyone is so excited about the fresh air that has been blowing through the lovely art deco arcades lately – the community spirit and activities and goods from all over the world are drawing in locals and visitors alike” say the Brickbox café partners – ‘@Number3’ located near the indoor piazza."

When - Saturday 10th March, 12pm - 4pm

Where - Tooting Market, 21-23 Tooting High Street, Tooting, London, SW17 0SN

Antlers Gallery Pop-up Exhibition in Clerkenwell

Bristol's Antlers Gallery is a nomadic gallery, with no fixed location.  In late March they're coming on tour to London - catch them while you can!  (Picture above shows The Fruits of Sacrifice by Tim Lane)

"Antlers Gallery is one of the most recent and intriguing editions to Bristol’s art scene. Launched in 2010 they represent an emerging group of artists who bring contemporary interpretations to traditional methods and subjects. Central to all the artist’s work are skill-based practices, good draughtsmanship with a particular focus on drawing and painting. Works with strong narrative elements, pieces that evoke a sense of the uncanny and references to the natural world also unify the artists. For the first time this rapidly developing Bristol scene will be on show in London, with the Antlers curated show – ‘Other Nature’.
‘Other Nature’ brings contemporary interpretations to traditional genres through re-examining and manipulating the ideas of Natural History, Landscape and Narrative painting. The works have all been produced in the urban environment and create a tension between the natural and the man-made. Within many of the works animal and natural forms are positioned as the ‘other’ in turn redefining the human position. The otherness of nature juxtaposed with the human familiarity creates an un-easy, uncanny or otherworldly aesthetic.
ARTISTS EXHIBITING:  Abigail Reed, Alexander Korzer-Robinson, Amy Timms, Anouk Mercier, Ellie Coates, Helen Jones, Max Naylor, Rose Sanderson, Tim Lane"

When - 19th - 31st March

Frocks & Frills Vintage Fair in Wimbledon

A new vintage fair is coming - this time in Wimbledon.

"Frocks & Frills Vintage Fair is launching at St Mark’s Hall in Wimbledon on 14th April 2012. With over twenty stalls packed with the best in vintage fashion and home wares all at old-time prices, this eclectic collection is sure to tempt anyone with an eye for vintage style.
Established by Catherine Beck, an experienced vintage trader and herself a vintage addict, Frocks & Frills is the first of its kind in the local area. Having toured the South buying and selling the best bits from decades past, Catherine – a life-long Wimbledon resident – noticed her home town was lacking a strong vintage presence, and hopes that Frocks & Frills will fill the void.
Stall-holders have been selected based on the quality, value for money and authenticity of what’s on offer, and as a result Frocks & Frills will boast timeless classics sold by some of the country’s finest vintage traders. The popularity of vintage continues to grow and Catherine hopes that this will be the first of many future events.
Whether it’s a piece of fashion history or classic items for the home, you’ll be sure to find something you love."

When - Saturday 14th April

Where - St Mark’s Hall, St Mark’s Place, Wimbledon, SW19 7ND (behind Wimbledon Library)

The Art of Dining Pop-up 'Vanitas' Banquet & Art Exhibition in Hackney

Regular Popper-uppers The Art of Dining are back with a 5 day pop-up banquet in Hackney.  Last month's theme was the seaside; this month it's a collaboration with the Horsebox Gallery around the theme of 16th century still life painting, with the feast taking place in a Tudor house.

"The Art of Dining & The Horsebox Gallery offer you a chance to indulge in a dining and art exhibition on the theme of Vanitas.  The exhibition and feast will be hosted in a 16th century Tudor house creating an opulent and thought provoking experience.
Vanitas, a genre of still life painting that originated in the 15th & 16th centuries containing collections of objects, symbolic of the transience of life, the futility of pleasures, and the inevitability of death.
Carefully composed items; skulls, decaying fruit, gold, baubles, literature, instruments, hour glasses all held moral codes, and exhorted the viewer to consider the morality & consequently repent.  In a National Trust treasure Sutton House, this pop-up will translate Vanitas into food, art, set design, and offer a chance to relish a five course banquet as our predecessors would have done before us."

When - 27th - 31st March

Where - Sutton House, 2-4 Homerton High Street, Hackney E9 6QJ
Note - pre-booking only

Cost - £45 per head - book here
