Chris Bracey's Pop-up Art Store 'God's Own Junkyard' in Primrose Hill

Chris Bracey is a British artist who specialises in neon signs.  You can now see (& buy) some of these works at a new pop-up store at Daniel Poole's The old Hardware Store in Primrose Hill.  Not for the faint-hearted though - works start at £400.

"Chris Bracey has been the Neon Man for 37 years creating iconic artpieces for David la chappelle, Martin Creed etc. With a cult following in London and Los Angeles.
New & used neon fantasies, salvaged signs, vintage neon’s, old movie props and retro displays.
Neon art made from found objects, retrieved and renewed waste and lights.
Fairground & circus lighting, architectural sign salvage. Led & cold cathode luxury products.
Designers & makers of all things with light.
Chris has made, installed and collected signs that have appeared behind some of the greatest stars. Tom Cruise in Eyes Wide Shut, Johnny Depp in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Jack Nicholson in Batman are just a few that have appeared alongside the collection. When the film is rapped neon’s are discarded like yesterdays newspapers, unwanted, unloved. Chris has collected these neon and bulb icons and salvages old neon’s and architectural advertising from the streets before they disappear forever. Repaired and resurrected, coupled with quirky art and powered up to shine like jewels of light. Icons in their own right, Gods own junk yard where neon never dies."

Circus Christmas Fashion Market in Shoreditch Featuring Emerging British Designer & Fashion Labels - NOW FINISHED

Circus is a festival of hand-picked British fashion labels, coming to Shoreditch this December.  It's in the Tramshed, and for five days over 30 exhibitors - including Alice Made This, Cookie Girl, Lost Property of London, and Silken Flavours - will be creating special stalls to show off their wares.

"Over five days in December CIRCUS will see a cherry picked selection of the most exciting emerging British design and fashion labels set up shop in the heart of East London in the theatrical setting of a disused power station. This dramatic venue will play host to a unique shopping experience of carefully selected labels ranging from homewares, ceramics, fashion, jewellery, taxidermy and art amongst many others.
Each label will create their very own concept stall which pushes the standard boundaries of retail presentation; the more imaginative, the better. There will also be a traditional Christmas fair selling Christmas trees, roasted chestnuts and gift wrapping as well as a cider bar and a Christmas bakery hosted by Lily Vanilli."

Rent Shelf Space at Things British near Carnaby Street

As the popularity of this site grows, I'm getting more and more queries from people wanting to set up a pop-up shop and wanting to know if I can help.  I generally refer them to my Advice & Resources page, but now I can also refer them to Things British.

Things British is based in Kingly Court, between Carnaby Street and Kingly Street.  They rent shelf space to people who make craft items, and sell it on their behalf.  Makers pay in advance, but after that they get all the revenue from sales - there is no commission charge.  It might be worth investigating!

"If you want your very own brick-and-mortar shop to sell your craft but don’t have the time, capital or resources to make that happen, then we are offering a new, contemporary opportunity for makers to take what might be a profession or a pastime to a whole new level.
Our Managed Retail Services provide you with a share of an exciting brick-and-mortar retail environment where you are assigned your own dedicated shelf, wall or rack space. We provide the staff but unlike a trade fair - we do all the selling for you as part of the service - so you don’t have to be there. On top of all that we include advertising, joint promotions, events and marketing activities, free listings on our social ecommerce site and perhaps best of all, we take absolutely no commission on anything sold. You set the retail prices and all the nett profits are yours to keep. From glass to ceramics, jewellery to paper craft, clothing to toys, artwork to well almost anything handcrafted here in Britain - we showcase and curate your talent in a low-risk professional and supportive retail environment. So if you are looking for an opportunity to showcase new work - test the market, or looking for a more permanent venue to sell your work, then THINGS BRITISH is for you.
Our Managed Retail Services include an allocation of space within the shop on a row of your choice. The pricing is based on the diagram opposite and below. You can book today and pay a £30 deposit (by PayPal) to reserve a shelf in your name. You can select a "Start Date" up to 14 days from today. The Start Date is the date when your rental starts and your stock is on your shelf ready to be sold. The 14 days gives you time to get ready! For those of you who are ready to go, then you can select a start date of tomorrow! (Note that you cannot select a Start Date beyond 14 days from today)."

The Crafty Fox at Christmas Market in Brixton - NOW FINISHED

The Crafty Fox is holding a Christmas craft market in the Dogstar in Brixton.  The Crafty Fox is the brainchild of Brixton local Sinead Koehler who makes jewellery under the Galavant label, and was launched last year to provide a platform for emerging designer makers to showcase what they've made.  It sounds great - it's craft, but there will also be food (& it is being held in a pub as well!)

"Three Floors of Handmade Heaven - The Crafty Fox Christmas Markets: 10th & 11th December
It takes a crafty fox to sniff out the fun ways to do your Christmas shopping this festive season.  With 50+ handpicked stalls over two days, plenty of hands-on workshops, a bar, DJ’s and a pop up tea room, the Crafty Fox Christmas Market at the Dogstar in Brixton, will not disappoint.
Treasures range from hand-drawn plates from Jimbobart and screen printed t-shirts from Homework Collective through to unique handmade leather bags and accessories from N’damus.  As always at Crafty Fox, you will also find a few quirky surprises – perhaps a knitted beard from Hairy Molly would be just the thing to finish off that Santa costume!
Crafty Fox takes place on all three floors of the Dogstar, so when you’ve filled your stockings take a moment to explore.  Rediscover the lost art of letter writing with the Letter Lounge, make your own decorations with Seaside Sisters or fashion a purse or card holder with Oh Sew Brixton.
Your festive shopping can be stitched up in one go as you soak up tunes by local DJ’s or enjoy a well-deserved cuppa with The Teas Knees."

Swedish Ski Lodge Pop-up Venue at The Well in Clerkenwell

This sounds great - but it's open for group bookings only, unfortunately.  If you need an unusual venue for a Christmas party look no further, though...

"Popping up again this December, downstairs at Clerkenwell’s favourite gastropub is The Well’s Christmas Swedish Ski Lodge.
For the ultimate après-ski experience, go underground and discover a Nordic wonderland of fake furs, glittery reindeers and party poppers that ping from the fir Christmas trees. No salopettes or thermals required in this chalet, as there will be Aquavit, a local schnapps, and ice-cold vodka a plenty to keep you warm along with classic Swedish sounds of Ace of Base, Roxette and Abba to get the party started.  Eat Scandinavian too and tuck into a ‘Jubord’, a traditional Christmas smorgasbord, of smoked reindeer and baby pickles; elk fillet tartare on rye; Swedish meatball brochettes  with tomato fondue; soused herrings, mustard and dill; citrus gravid lax with pickled cucumber and rye bread; crayfish and dill polar bread cones; soft boiled quail eggs with herring roe; and onion, herb and potato cream tarts with keta caviar.
The Well Swedish Ski Lodge can host parties of up to 70 people. Better yet, there is no hire charge. Private hire only. Minimum spends will apply. Canapés cost from £17 per person for six."

Review - the Barcelona Supper Club by Codorniu

On Wednesday night my friend Ali and I went to a fantastic interactive supper club. Most supper clubs give you great food and company; this one gave us all of that but also a cookery class, a cava tasting class, and a Jamon carving class...

The Barcelona Supper Club, organised by Codorniu, took place downstairs at L’atelier des Chefs in Wigmore Street.  It’s a medium sized venue, which normally serves as a cookery school.  We all signed in, were served our first (of many) glasses of cava, and given access to some delicious olives and bread.

We were given a small guide book to the evening, and put into 3 groups, to make the numbers more manageable for the different activities.  We could see the menu on the blackboard, and luckily my group got to do the cooking first.  I say luckily, because we were being plied with cava very liberally; I’m glad I was cooking early on!

The cookery session was run by Rachel McCormack from Catalan Cooking.  She took us through the prep and cooking of the final course, Anec amb Peras y Espinacs a Catalana (Duck breast with Codorniu cava Soaked Pears and Carrots, Broccoli, and New Potatoes), showing us first how to chop the tomatoes to the right size, then seal the duck and so on.  This lasted about 20 minutes or so, and we got to mark our casserole dishes so that we could find what we’d cooked at the end. (The equipment we got to use was fantastic - the Le Creuset frying pan is going straight onto my Christmas list!)

Then it was time for the ‘Fizzness School’ aka Cava Tasting, where Nick Mantella gave us 5 of the different Codorniu varieties to taste.  All were delicious, but I think my favourite was the Anna de Codorniu, which is the best-selling cava in Spain.

Then to the Jamon carving, led by Chuse Valero, who made it look so easy, and cut off huge amounts of fresh Jamon from the bone for us to taste. Quite simply I’ve never lasted ham like it.  Even the best you can buy has inevitably lost something through storage; this just tasted insanely good!

Then it was time to eat.  The four courses that had been cooked - Jamon y Pa amb Tomaquet (carved ham with tomato bread), Xato de Sitges (Salt cod and Romesco Sauce with Curly Endive), Calamarsons Farcits de Ceba (Baby squid stuffed with caramelised onions), & finally our own Anec amb Peras y Espinacs a Catalana were brought to the table in turn and wolfed down.  All the teams had done their cooking bits well, and all were very good.

By this point we were running a bit later than we’d hoped, so we had to race off, but not forgetting to grab our goodie bags (inc. a bottle of cava).

Overall it was a brilliant, brilliant night, and fantastic value for £40 a head.  Most cookery classes cost more than that, without the other sessions and tha cava.  Probably not one for teetotallers, people who don’t like cava, or vegetarians, but we’d definitely do it again.  Please Codorniu - can we do it again..?

Dita Von Teese's Pop-up Speakeasy in Piccadilly

File under 'very select'!  Burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese is opening a pop-up speakeasy in the Pigalle Club in Piccadilly at the end of November in association with Cointreau Prive.  To gain access you need to be a member of the Cointreau community (see link below) and then request to attend.

""I opened a similar private bar in Paris last year," she told us. "It was with a collaboration with Cointreau Privé, and I really wanted to bring the same concept to London and then eventually to LA. It's going to be every elegant, like my own home, and have a great retro style. There's nothing like this in London, I'm hoping that having a drink in my bar will be an unforgettable experience."
Inside Von Teese's Paris bar, which carries a similar decor to the London venue
The bar, open for a three-week period, will be decorated using Von Teese's personal items, including costumes covered in Swarovski crystals. Drinks will come in the form of expertly-made cocktails, crafted by professional mixologists.
"It'll be glamorous and sexy. I hope people will have a great night out there," she said. "My favourite bars are the Fumoir in Claridge's and Le Bar Hemingway at The Ritz in Paris. Bars should have a luxurious feel to them, they should be cosy with a story behind them - a little bit of history. I hope my bar will be as special.""

Too Much Is Never Enough Pop-up Restaurant in Shoreditch

The Disappearing Dining Club are back, this time with a month-long residency in Shoreditch, offering multiple courses over multiple floors, right up until Christmas.  It sounds like it's going to be very dramatic, very theatrical, and very memorable.  The Club hosts regular events, most recently this Dinner Dance.

"Too Much is Never Enough is a four course exploration of 123 Bethnal Green Road, a beautiful, Grade II listed, Victorian corner terrace, its rich and colourful history, and the beautiful gift and fashion concept store now housed witin it.
Each floor is a course. Welcome cocktails are followed by mini-Winter Soups and Potted Meats in Menswear, a second floor East End boys club that tells the story of Moderne Buckles, the previous occupiers of 123, and front for a network of illegal gun suppliers. Mains are served in Ladieswear, an elegantly dressed boudoir with antique nudes, vintage erotica, great wine choices and a huge sharing table with giant, cast iron hot pots of Coq au Vin, Cassoulet and Vegetable Stews with big, tasty winter salads. Desserts are in the Bunker Cafe with Hot Doughnuts, Spiced Rum & Mince Pies, Britsh Cheeses and dessert cocktails with drinking, DJs and late night fun till midnight.
Shop, or don’t shop. It’s up to you. We think a visit to Too Much is Never Enough will take you about 3 hours and costs £50 for three courses of great food and four very lovely drinks.
There’s also a 10% discount off everything you buy at Too Much Is Never Enough and every guest will be given a 10% discount card valid till the end of February 2012."

The Fourth Wall Wandering Bar

The Fourth Wall is a very neat concept - a bar that appears in a different location each week.  Visit the website to see a cryptic picture to reveal the location (see recent example above), and get in touch via their website to get on the guest list.

"Created by the people behind Bourne and Hollingsworth and Blitz Party, The Fourth Wall is a new roaming bar concept that moves to a new secret location each weekend.
Designed to recreate the familiar within the unfamiliar, The Fourth Wall is a complete replica of Bourne and Hollingsworth bar  of Rathbone Place that will be touring London and occupying a different location every week.  From the distinctive flowered wallpaper and the table cloths, to the furniture and the cocktail glasses, The Fourth Wall will completely duplicate the original Fitzrovia venue but, like a film set or a theatre prop, this wandering bar will be packed away at the end of the night and move on.
The wandering bar is a completely original drinking and social concept. Like stepping into the looking glass, The Fourth Wall has created a known world set within the unknown. Guests will walk into a space, be it a warehouse or ballroom, then walk through another door into a completely new venue.
The Fourth Wall indulges in its artifice. Rather like breaking down the fourth wall in theatre, this bar can be seen in its raw form as a specially constructed installation, but once inside, guests will feel as  though they are back in the original bar NoHo. The  Fourth Wall will  challenge their  previous  perceptions and experiences of Bourne and Hollingsworth by creating new, but familiar ones in their place.
[...]
Guests  at The Fourth Wall  will be able to  enjoy the  sharp and sophisticated  cocktail  concoctions found at Bourne and Hollingsworth, as well as experiencing the music, atmosphere and décor synonymous with its twin.
The Fourth Wall’s wandering location will remain a secret to those not in the know. As the weeks go on, there will be hints left around London in the form of notes, emails, messages and codes, as the locations get harder to find out about."

When - Friday & Saturday, 5pm - 1am

Makerhood Pop-up Christmas Market in Brixton - NOW FINISHED

Makerhood is an initiative that's run by volunteers to promote local makers, and help them to sell their goods.  They're creating a craft market in the very popular Brixton Village covered market for three weekends in the run-up to Christmas.

"Visitors to Brixton Village, one of London’s hottest dining spots, will also be able to buy some cool Christmas presents from local makers, as Makerhood Brixton sets up some pop-up stalls in the next few weeks.
Makerhood Brixton (https://makerhood.com) is a local website that helps shoppers in Brixton and nearby areas of south London find local makers and producers.
The website currently lists over 430 items from more than 50 local makers, ranging from biscuits and greetings cards to T-shirts, prints and bedside cabinets. Prices start at 80p for a postcard of Brixton and go up to £1,400 for an artwork based on Arabic calligraphy.
While there are many websites selling handmade items, Makerhood Brixton is unique in trying to forge links between local makers and buyers. As well as posting goods, sellers also offer to deliver or hand over items at local meeting points, allowing buyers to meet the person who made it and learn more about them.
Some of the sellers are professional traders, like Lucy Hodge of Brazen Bettie, who makes kitsch vintage print pinnies.
Others enjoy making things for a hobby, such as Dima Jarkas of Le Petit Type, who sells cards made on her own letterpress."

Ebay Christmas Pop-up Shop in Soho - NOW FINISHED

One of the reasons for having a pop-up shop is to give a physical presence to online-only stores, and now Ebay have announced that they will be opening a pop-up store in London in the run up to Christmas.  You can't actually buy goods in the store, but you can handle and examine, and then buy over a smartphone app to be delivered to your home a few days later.  Details are pretty sketchy so far, but we know that it'll be for 5 days only, and in Dean Street.  So - Amazon next?

"If you have a QR-reading smartphone, you will be able to scan a tag and have your phone take you to where you need to be in the online store. If not, eBay has partnered with HTC to lend you a smartphone whilst you are in store — acting as your personal shopping list.
Instead of tills and cashiers, tablets will be used to offer the full eBay shopping experience to customers who wish to browse the site anyhow.
The experimental store will be open only for a few days, as part of the auction giant’s bid to move towards the mainstream British ‘high street’."

HMV Pop-up Technology Store in St Paul's

HMV have had pop-ups before - records and DVDs sell far more in the run-up to Christmas than at other times of the year so it makes sense - but this is their first 'technology only' store:

"At the new pop-up store, which is leased until the start of 2012 with an option to extend the agreement, there will be a small selection of chart computer games, CDs and DVD/Blu-ray titles but most of its 1,200 sq ft will be dominated by tech goods.
Ewan Pinder, HMV Head of Technology, commented: “HMV’s remit has always been to give its customers the widest-possible access to music, film and games, however they want to discover and enjoy them.
“So our move into personal technology products, including through this new-style store, is actually a very natural next step for us that supports our continuing transformation into a broad-based entertainment brand.
“Headphones, in particular, are really taking off in a big way, and are set to be among the ‘must-have’ gift items this Christmas.”"

Pip's Dish Prospero's Kitchen Pop-up Restaurant in Islington

Food writer Philip Dundas is organising some nights of fun with his new Pip's Dish night in a secret location in Islington.  It will take place for three nights a week - Thursday to Saturday - between now and Christmas.

"Once again, working with my partners at Farm Direct, I’m creating something called Prospero’s Kitchen. Not only will you experience fresh produce from farms, boats and artisan producers across the UK but because it’s Christmas I’m giving people a special evening and combining my love of food and theatre. I will be collaborating with actors and performers to create a menu of diverting and culinary delights to get your Christmas holidays off with a sparkling performance, a song, the doffing of a chapeau and some bright stars in the sky!
The dinners will be exclusive evenings organised to delight you and your friends. I am only running a few of these pop up festive dinners, so you’ll need to book quickly (3 evenings are already booked out to parties). For a cost of £35 you’ll get a 3 course dinner. You can book tables of 6 or if you want you can share a table with new and delicious friends."

Courvoisier's Dickensian Walking Tours in London - NOW FINISHED

Courvoisier is going to be holding walking tours around London (starting in Covent Garden) in November and December.  You'll get to meet some Dickensian characters and drink some special punch, and it all sounds rather splendid.  Tours cost £12 per person, and are bookable here.

"The Courvoisier Dickens Punch Tour is an interactive, hour long walking tour of Dickensian London, visiting Dickens favourite haunts and past residences. During the tour you will find yourself immersed in the drama of ‘A Christmas Carol’  complete with Dickens’ characters popping up along the way! The historic journey will culminates with a well-deserved Christmas Courvoisier Smoking Bishop punch made by Ebenezer Scrooge himself (just like the final scene of the festive favourite) at Dickens’ personal book binders, the Old Curiosity Shop.
‘Guests can expect the unexpected as well as learning some history along the way with locations including Bow Street Magistrates Court (where Bob Cratchit would have gone if Scrooge had put him up in front of the debtors court), the Charles Dickens Coffee Shop and St Clements Danes Church (whose bells are said to have woken Scrooge from his nightmare dreams). They will also take away a surprise gift so that they can recreate this Christmas spirit and festive frolics at home.’"
